Boats in distress?

  1. Help people first. Do not overload your boat. Children in first.

  3. Call for help if your boat is too small.
  4. You may be able to organise a team to help the boat on distress.

IF the boat in distress is now floating & safe,

  1. Some adults may be able to go back onboard to keep it safe while you take it under tow.
  2. Children stay safe with you on your boat.

IF the distressed boat is not safe and people are in the water.

  1. Look after the people first, children in our boat, adults HOLDING, your boat,
  2. Immediate call for help (000, MAYDAY, or Police assist 13 14 44)
  3. Children must come into your boat and keep them warm. They get cold quickly.
  4. Do not overload your boat. Leave adults in the water. Tie their hands to your boat if they are getting too cold.

TAKING CHARGE OF A TOW:-

  1. Fix a long tow line with easy release (Tugman's tie) on your boat centre tow point.  You may need to rig a centre-aft tow point on your boat. (Do not tow from your stern. You will have no steering control.)
  2. You may be able to push-tow on their aft quarter with your bow spring push line rig, if your stern is cluttered with no centre tow point.
  3. Your Crew must watch the tow and be ready to let go the Tugman's tie from your end if you tell them.
  4. You must use a "Quick let go, Tugman's tie" in case of your boat danger.

Skippers SHOULD have 1st Aid skills, especially CPR.
