Cox3 NC class can be done on any available commercial Boat

Our Boat Licence class add on:- Entry level Commercial is a must have if paid, even on this tinny.

Coxswain grade 3 Near Coastal is the minimum required for any paid boat crew. It is restricted to 3 paid workers in a tinny like this tender with no passengers.

Cox3NC course can be done as an extension to our boat licence theory class or as one day class on any commercial boat. The boat can be moored. We need access to the boat for safety equipment check and procedures, better if we can operate it.

The following is needed for the Cox3NC:

  1. Our complete boat licence course content
  2. Evidence of your 1st aid qualifications.

Content:

  1. Man overboard rescue (High sided boat)
  2. Hypothermia & CPR
  3. Rope and Line skills, useful knots, throwing a monkey.
  4. Mooring commercial riverboats, (same as HIre houseboats)

+ Sea Boats:

  1. Setting and recovering anchor.
  2. When to use a fore & aft or splay anchor.
  3. Operating with twin motors
  4. Operating in shallow waters, surf waves, crossing bars. Feeling the boat in shallow waters or near river banks or sandbars.
  5. Maintaining a ship's log = skipper's requirement.

Your boat helping other boats, & FIRST AID skills check.

Boats in distress, help people first, then boat.

  1. If the boat is floating & safe, take it under tow
  2. Long line with easy release on your boat centre tow point.  (Set up your boat with centre tow point if possible. Do not tow from your stern. You will have no steering control.)
  3. You may be able to push-tow on their aft quarter with your bow spring as a push line rig if your stern is cluttered with no centre tow point.
  4. Your Crew must watch it and be ready to let go if you tell them.
  5. Use a "Quick let go tow lock tie" in case of your boat danger.

IF the distressed boat is not safe and people are in the water. Look after the people first, children in, with adults in water HOLDING, your boat,

  1. Immediate call for help (000, MAYDAY, or Police assist 13 14 44)
  2. Children must come into your boat, and keep them warm. They get cold quickly.
  3. Do not overload your boat. Leave adults in the water. Tie their hands to your boat if they are getting too cold.

Skippers SHOULD have 1st Aid skills, especially CPR.

  1. BREATHING? Coughing? Put victim on their side, head back, push chest to cough up water.
  2. YES BREATHING, Move to shelter, Lay on side, Keep warm (Perhaps hypothermia = cuddle up in a blanket with them}
  3. NO BREATHING? No cough. Start CPR ... Death comes in about 5 minutes with no breathing.
  4. First aid kit for a boat - a car kit is adequate
  5. (Oxygen set may be needed for people at risk)

See our first aid page . . Typical boat first aid kit requirements
