There are SAFE RIGHT WAYS and MANY UNSAFE WRONG WAYS.
Passing a written test only predicts practical disaster.
No Skills training there. Unsafe SA Gov system has lasted too long.
Thank goodness they are now in the process of changing it.

COURSE LOCATION - WE MUST HAVE ACCESS FOR PRACTICAL BOAT WORK
Training Base is Angas Inlet Boat Club, Garden Island Boat ramp, Dolphin Sanctuary.
OR, I will travel to any suitable location and use any available boat, including houseboat for practical skills training.
Individual fee $350. Fees for group, use of local boat, or travel to different location are negotiable.
MORNING SESSION - DISCUSSION AND THEORY KNOWLEDGE
Boat knowledge, safety discussion with boats, nav-signs and lights demonstration on the table
09:00 - 12:00 hrs Course starts inside the Angas Inlet Boat Club
Government Regulations & Must have Safety Equipment & Rule of three.
Petrol & fire safety
Maintaining boat stability
Collision regulations (avoiding collision - Always get it right)
Distance away & keeping good all round watch
Signs, colors, shapes, messages
Calling for help, Marine radio, requirement to assist vessel in distress
First Aid skills required of skipper
Practical driving models on table top.
AFTERNOON SESSION PRACTICAL ON WATER BOAT SKILLS - OUR BOAT, OR ANY LOCAL BOAT
Don life jackets and check each other.
Prepare boat for launching, check safety equipment.
Backing a boat trailer & launching the boat
Entering the boat (Rule of three = 3 points of contact)
Use of boat controls
Recognizing speed and distances away
Boat handling skills and keeping good watch
Man overboard recovery
Berthing the Boat
